
The Mary White Prize for Best Article in Phoenix
The Mary White Prize for Best Article published in Phoenix is awarded on an annual basis and includes a cash prize of $500. The award has been instituted by the editorial board of Phoenix in honour of Mary White (1908–1977), the first editor of the journal. The judges, who are chosen by the Editor from the members of the Phoenix editorial board, serve a two-year term. Articles which originated as CAC plenary lectures are not eligible for the prize.Mary White was an accomplished classicist who held a professorship at Trinity College (University of Toronto), was a founding member of the Classical Association of Canada and of Phoenix, and a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada. Additionally, she was the first woman to be head of her college’s department and the first woman to be head of a graduate department at the University of Toronto.
